His Honour Judge David MacNaughton (“just call me ‘Dave’ “) had a distinguished career as a patient, compassionate, and fair judge. Anyone who appeared before him knew they had been heard whether or not he ruled in their favour. He set an example in the courtroom.
He brought an amazing sense of humour to any venue. He was very sociable and well-rounded. He was generous to others, including strangers. Although one of his arms was crippled from polio nothing stood in his way.
Every year Dave and his wife Vange, along with their children, hosted an Annual Pig Roast for the Bench and Bar in central Alberta. This was an evening of socializing and celebration when the family opened the family home and farm property for games, cooking, the odd sing song, and sharing stories. It brought the legal community and those associated with it closer together.
Dave was devastated by the loss of his wife. And he never stopped being a loving and supportive father to his seven children.
Dave set an example for all of us. He is sadly missed.

Reading the announcement of David’s passing and all the accomplishments he had during his lifetime has got me thinking of my time as an assistant to the Secretary Treasurer of the Stettler School District No. 1475, back in 1971 - 1976, although I never had that title, but that’s basically what I did. I remember David as a trustee on the School Board and he’d most always come in the monthly meetings wearing a suit, tie, brief case/attaché case in hand, walking with a purposeful step acknowledging everyone who may already be at the table and take his spot at the table ready to tackle the agenda. As a young almost 20 year old District employee exposed/watching this day/week/year in, year out you can’t help but fashion your own behavior accordingly. Here, a lawyer, School Trustee (an elected position)(still to this day), among other community positions, you think, Man! How does he do it? I didn’t know he had 7 children, incredible. And perhaps naïve on my part due to my young age. Shortly after I left Stettler for Red Deer School District, I learned he had been appointed to the Provincial Judical
Bar (I hope I’ve got that right). Where’s he going to stop, “has Stettler lost a pillar of its community I thought?” And your own life
unfolds and time passes, and then responsibilities change to your own family, and you read the announcement and to think he was at Points West! That’s just 4 blocks plus a gas station and an intersection North of where I live today!; could have gone to see him, would he remember me? Out of the thousands of people he would have come in contact with in his lifetime…….Maybe. Don’t know, will never know.
In closing, Thank You David! My apologies here, Trustee’s came to the office regularly to the point we were on a first name basis with them and us to them; Mr. McNaughton for your influence, shall we say, on me. We hear a lot today about “careful, cause there’s always someone watching”. Well , a mere “thank you “ seems inadequate , but I watched and observed and admired and learned, even in 70’s. You have earned your rest! May you RIP . As I labor to find an appropriate ending, I can only think of one quote I read or heard somewhere that is fitting for a Judge and the use of his gavel and it goes like this: “Service to others is the RENT we pay for our ROOM here on planet Earth, and for you David P. McNaughton (insert sound of the gavel smacking the hardwood base here), your RENT...... IS PAID IN FULL!

Anne and I are sad to hear of Judge MacNaughton’s passing.
He was a great Judge and he always found a practical way to get court matters dealt with. He was the first Judge I appeared in court in front of and he made it tough. Lol. He asked me for my driver’s license and even my Law Society card. Little did I know that I had a cousin in town with the same name. Barbecues at the MacNaughton homestead will be remembered for the great times and incredible hospitality.
Rest in Peace Judge MacNaughton.

Growing up with the MacNaughtons in small town Stettler: from young girl crushes on the MacNaughton boys, to being in awe of the beauty of the MacNaughton girls, to hearing about Vange's creativity at the pottery wheel to seeing the athleticism of Dave in his starched white outfit on the tennis courts, the MacNaughtons wielded a formidable presence in our town and in our lives. It wasn't until I was older that I understood better what this unique family, with Dave and Vange at the helm, represented: pursuit of excellence, strength of family, staying true to self and promotion of community. I send my deepest condolences to all the MacNaughtons but I know that Dave's legacy lives on in his fabulous family and in the memories of those privileged to have known him.

Our condolences to all the MacNaughton family. We last saw Dave when he attended the K40 BBQ in June and we had a nice chat with him. Great memories of the K40 BBQs and Christmas get togethers at Vance and his beautiful home and acreage. Unfortunately I’m “under the weather” and won’t be able to bid farewell to this unique man tomorrow.

It is with great sadness when we heard of the passing of such a vital and gregarious individual that Dave was. He and my father, Leo Gitzel, we’re great friends and irksome adversaries on some issues and we were back alley neighbors during my school years. We will give our condolences in this message as prior commitments do not allow our attendance on the 27th. To all the family members may you retain the best memories of this wonderful man and keep him close in your hearts for the years to come.

The Judge has departed us, and our world is a poorer place because of it. Dave was a great inspiration to me, and I know to countless others. His ever-present grin and wit added interest to any conversation all the years I knew him. From our many years on the Youth Centre’s Screening and Matching Committee to our countless chats and debates about Robert Raymond Cook, Dave always challenged me to look at things from all points of view. He was a master perspective builder. We had tons of chuckles together, which were added to when he and buddy Leo Gitzel would come over for Sharon’s shepherd’s pie, and a wee dram of scotch of course!
I also enjoyed his love of Marty Robbins gunfighter ballads, which he would insist on me singing whenever entertaining at Paragon.
We are sad that we’ll be in the Maritimes on a long-planned holiday and I won’t be here to bid him good-bye along with his dedicated family and countless friends.
Sir David was a dynamic, talented, intelligent friend. I will miss him greatly.

Ray and I are so sorry for the loss of such a great man who touched many lives over the years. I will never forget the first year I worked at Sloan & MacNaughton law firm, fresh out of highschool, senior business diploma in hand! I enjoyed a bit too much of the judge's famous eggnog. He was kind enough to walk me around out on the patio of the Golf Club as I was a tad wobbly and in need of fresh air! Needless to say, I've never touched eggnog since haha! He and Vange raised a wonderful family♡ He will be missed by all who knew him. Our condolences to the MacNaughton family.

What a perfect picture the family picked to say goodbye to Dave. I was fortunate to work with Dave from 1978 to 1984 when he was appointed to the bench. His appointment was a huge benefit to the Judicial system and a huge personal loss for me. As an indication of his character Dave came to me and said he had been offered an appointment but let me know he would turn it down if I thought it would be unfair to the partnership. I took him at his word and told him I was thrilled for his opportunity and to get on with it. I am still trying to understand how one of only four liberals in the province would be appointed by a conservative government but it must have truly been a merit appointment. Dave ruled for years on common sense and a vast wealth of life experiences. It was very seldom he ever admitted to actually reading some law. He was highly respected by all those involved in the court system.
All the years I knew him he called me a dumb bastard. I took it as a term of endearment and was always happy to see him. Offended never. That was how in the last several years I knew he remembered me.
I will miss you my old friend and mentor. You deserve to Rest In Peace.
