My sincere condolences to John’s family and friends. I first met John when I attended Acme High School in grade 10. John had a great sense of humour. Throughout high school we were friends and enjoyed spending time going to various “events”around the country side. He was always there with a smile and a joke. I have the same sentiment as Darryl Toew’s, as to why we didn’t stay in touch after high school.

Very sorry to hear about John. One of our favourite memories is laughing with him about Benny Hill. John had such a unique talent to make people laugh and feel good. We will remember him fondly.

I became great friends with John within weeks of him moving here! We had a heyday trying to get him to say inappropriate things to the teacher! Later I got the feeling he knew exactly what the words meant, he was always good for a laugh, and always up for adventure! After Reading his obituary, I can’t understand why the hell we drifted apart after high school! Rest in peace my friend

John, this is a story from your brother Jake,
I remember,I believe it was late summer and we got to play a soccergame against the Acme highschool kids.
Winning was rare with our team but we usually had lots of fun.
Anyway, during this game John got the ball,I believe, I even passed it to him.
He was totally by himself, nobody around for at least thirty feet.
He took the ball up and it really looked like he was going to do something special with it.
Then he managed by his lonesome to step on the ball and completely wipe out.
Of course I couldn't stop laughing.
Needless to say,it was easy pickings for the highschool kids to pick up the ball and score.
Afterwards I said to him that there is an obvious reason why we lost more games than we won over the course of the season.
We both, often, had a good chuckle about that moment.
Jan, ik zal je enorm gaan missen, jongen, en dat je zachtjes mag gaan rusten.

My sincere condolences for all the family of John Philipsen.
John, Jake and myself (and ofcourse also the other brothers) had lots of fun in the fantastic vacations I spent with them in Groningen in The Netherlands. When I think back at those times (John and me were between 6-10 years I guess) I still get a smile from ear to ear on my face. I loved going back year after year to join him and his family to have again a great and warm stay.
We laughed, and laughed and laughed. About the simplest things. My god what a fun we had. We were true rascals. Never a boring day.
I had the honour to be his roommate so I was with him almost 24/7. I’ll always remember being the smallest kid on the table and in the room but feeling big, because he made me feel special and almost like his little brother.
Proud to have have laughed with you so much,
Rest well John.
