Obituary
Obituary of Albert John Louis Laisnez
On December 31, 2017 Father Albert Laisnez died peacefully with his sister, Helene Dodd at his side. He was born on October 2, 1937 in Stettler, Alberta. He was the fourth child of John and Ange Laisnez. He was predeceased by his parents, elder brother Charles and twin sister Rosella Mahoney. Albert told many stories of the antics and fun of his childhood.
In 1955 Albert started his studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary in St. Albert, AB. A year later he journeyed to Rome to study theology and philosophy, graduating in 1963. He was able to visit home only twice during his years of study abroad. A remarkable undertaking for a farm boy. Father Albert was ordained as a Catholic priest on July 26, 1962.
Father Albert found his purpose as a parish priest. He worked at Pius X parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Agnes, Hinton/Grande Cache and in Churchill. He had a gift with words and making the teachings of Jesus relatable for his parishioners. We will always remember how highly he valued peace. His faithfulness and connectedness with the Lord grew the same in many of those that had the benefit of attending masses that he led.
Albert was a charitable man throughout his life, giving to many along the way. He believed that any prayer made with good intention would be heard by the Lord. He encouraged all to pray as if a conversation; sharing thoughts, feelings, joys, fears and gratitude. In doing so the grace of God would be received. He gave commitment, devotion, skills and hard work to the Church throughout his life.
He will be remembered as a loyal and loving son, bringing his Mom, to live with him in Sherwood Park. He also traveled with his parents to Australia, Fiji and Europe. He was a valuable traveling partner as he was multilingual. During his retirement Father Albert continued to grow and learn, auditing courses at McGill University. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. In 2012 Albert moved to Stettler. He enjoyed much time with his brother Charlie in that first year; he was very grateful for this (as are we).
Poor health over the past years lead Albert to grow in ways that we will always be thankful for. He showed us strength of spirit and conviction. We learned a different side of Beck (as we call him). One of simple needs, deep reflection, and vulnerability. This time gave us, his family, the privilege to get to know him as a very good person. For these moments of honest sharing and caring we are thankful.
He is survived by his loving sister Helene and her husband, Frank Dodd, his sister in law Adeline Laisnez, as well as many nieces and nephews. Albert was predeceased by his brother Charles (Theresa)Laisnez, his twin sister Rosella. We will always remember Albert’s deep faith and devotion to the Lord and his Church.
Funeral Mass was held at Christ King Parish on Thursday, January 4, 2018. His family and dear friends attended and participated in the service. Archbishop Richard Smith concelebrated over the service.
Memories of Albert will always be held dear. Albert’s legacy will be in the continuing good lives, works and faith in those who he served. Live on with integrity, and in the grace of the Lord.
Albert’s family wishes to thank all of his family and friends for the outpouring of cards, emails, and calls to him over the months and years; as well as to us over the last few days. The Laisnez Family
