Obituary of Elmer Gross
Elmer John Gross
1928 - 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elmer Gross at the Red Deer Hospital, Red Deer, Alberta on October 4, 2024, at the age of 96 years.
Elmer was born on March 1, 1928, at home in Hanna, Alberta, to Rosina and Gottlieb Gross, who immigrated to Canada from Bessarabia (now Russia). Elmer was the oldest of four sons, joining were his brothers Rudlof, Arthur, and Ben in their family farm life.
At a young age, Elmer left school in grade 6 to help on the family farm, where he developed a deep appreciation for the land and nature. His love for gardening was evident in the staples he grew—potatoes, carrots, and, notably, sunflowers that reached heights of over 12 feet.
Elmer was an active member of the Buffalo Lake Naturalists Club, where he took great pride in receiving the Blue Feather Award in 2009 and the Eco Excellence Award in 2017. His passion for woodworking led him to create many items, including bluebird houses that still grace the area around Stettler. His extensive bluebird house trail reflects his love for birds and the natural world.
A devoted member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Elmer found joy in his faith and community. He cherished his morning coffee at McDonald's, where he enjoyed the company of friends. Above all, Elmer treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing stories and creating lasting memories.
Elmer will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a commitment to nature that will continue to inspire.
Elmer is survived by his children: Eron Gross (Lena), Ken Gross (Lynn), Sylvia Gross, Lana Gross (Niel), and Faye Gendre; grandchildren: Dionne Gross (Colten), Kira Gross, Leanne Heaven, Lisa Howthorne, Kimberly Gendre, Nicole (Karson) Kajsa, Katherina Nattestad (Rob); great grandchildren: Jakob, Viktor, Louise; brother Ben Gross (Joan); as well as numerous other relatives and many dear friends.
Elmer was predeceased by his wife Mildred Ruth Gross; parents Rosina and Gottlieb Gross and brothers Rudlof and Arthur.
