Obituary of Sharon Ruth Watson
Sharon Ruth Watson, originally of Calgary, most recently of Stettler, Alberta, beloved wife of Dave Watson, loving mother of David, Jason and Kari, passed away quietly in her home at the age of 81 years.
Born in Calgary December 19, 1942 to Doreen and Richard Smith, Sharon spent summers in Big Valley with her Webster grandparents and cousins, all of whom she loved dearly. This spirited young girl grew into a strong, beautiful, incredible, caring woman with a fantastic sense of humour who was loved by all. Sharon loved making people laugh, and never missed an opportunity to do so.
Sharon met Dave Watson in high school and they were married in 1963. Not long after, along came children David, Jason and Kari. Sharon was a doting wife and mother who extended this love and care to three nephews who she raised for a time in their perfect little house in Parkhill.
Sharon and Dave loved to travel, often taking road trips to the West Coast and into the U.S. with friends and family. Some of her favourite trips were taken with cousin Allan and his wife Sylvia, brother-in-law Wayne, and let’s not forget her iconic trip to Las Vegas with sister Deanna to see Elvis perform.
It is no surprise that Sharon had several dear, close friends, many of whom she stayed in touch with for most of her life. If you called her in the mornings, her line was often busy as she would be on the phone sorting out the gossip and problems of the world, wearing her signature orange lipstick with a coffee and a cigarette in her hand. She loved having friends and family over, and a card game or six was mandatory. She loved playing Scrabble, and sometimes her games with Kari would get a little bit tense. The bingo halls and casinos will be missing her contributions.
While primarily a homemaker for most of her life, in her younger years she worked at Simpsons Sears in the credit department, dabbled in blackjack dealing, and ran a babysitting room at a local bingo hall. She was up to any task and always took great pride in her work.
After moving to Big Valley in 1996 Sharon finally got her drivers’ license and took great delight in driving all over to visit loved ones and to go fishing. She enjoyed being in her garden and had the most wonderful flowers which, unfortunately, the cats also loved.
Sharon’s health started to decline and she struggled with many new and interesting ailments in her later years. Husband Dave and her kids all made sure that she got to her appointments and that she was taken care of. In 2023, Dave and Sharon relocated to Willow Creek Lodge in Stettler where she was happy to let others do the cooking and cleaning.
Sharon was predeceased by her parents Richard Smith, Doreen Toker, her beloved in-laws Edward (Jock) and Eleanor Watson, her good friend Sylvia Webster, and her loving firecracker of a son, Jason Watson.
There are so many other wonderful things to say and stories to tell about this amazing woman. She will be extremely missed by her family: husband Dave, children David and Kari, nephews Greg, Clark and Brett, her great-nieces and nephews Sydney, Jenna, Brittney, Sam, Terrace and Devin who thought of her as their grandmother, sister Deanna Kuzyk, her many cousins, especially Allan and Joan, and friends, with honourable mention to Sandra, Betty and Elsie, and everyone else who knew this very special lady.
We love you lots.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
