Oh I have so many great memories of John, since we travelled to so many countries with John and Audrey over the years. One in particular happened daily in Lima, Peru where we went to help the Peruvians build a church. We women worked in the old church building making meals for the “working crew”. However, we had a very difficult stove to work with and John knew how to deal with it. So everyday when we were ready to begin cooking, one of the women would run down to the work site just about a block away and call for John to come and light the stove. The next scene remains imprinted in my memory forever - John with his swaying gate coming as fast as he could back down the street, lighter in hand and soon we had a stove lit and humming nicely and ready to heat all the cooking pots loaded with food for our upcoming dinner. John and Audrey were real assets to every work team they ever went on. And everyone loved them for the expertise or laughter or stove lighting talent they added to the teams .
