Obituary of Mabel Unruh

Please share a memory of Mabel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our mother, Mabel Reimer Unruh was born to Otto and Margaret Reimer on February 18,1937 at Swallwell, Alberta. She quietly slipped away on April 5,2023 at Westview Care Community, Linden, Alberta reaching the age of eighty-six years.

Mom began her school years at Antler School in Linden finishing at Mt.Lehman, Junior High in B.C. Growing up in a family of nine, Mom had happy memories of time  spent with siblings and friends. When she had completed grade nine she worked at various places including MSA hospital in Abbotsford.

Mom gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized on November 27,1949 by Min. Isaac Toews at Mt.Lehman,B.C. Mom cherished the faith and it was her prayer that her family would all meet in Heaven.

On December 23,1956 Mon was united in marriage to our Dad, Edward Unruh, by Min. A.J. Wilson at Mt.Lehman, B.C. Here they began their life together building up the family farm with poultry and cattle. Mom and Dad worked together in unity raising four children who blessed their home. Mom loved summertime when she could feed the dozens of hummingbirds or go on picnics down by the river. One of our childhood memories is of our parents spending Sunday afternoon singing duets. “Others” was a favorite and was sung often. We felt secure in our parents  home and they left us a beautiful legacy of love and faithfulness to the Lord.

In 1969 Mom had an unknown condition which doctors said there was no help and she would soon spend her days in a wheelchair. Through healing prayer her request was granted and God gave her a complete recovery. This experience strengthened her faith in God.

Mom was a quiet and happy homemaker   teaching us by example the value of being organized, neat and tidy. Mom loved to serve others, especially delighted in working with her friends on the Sewing Committee, helping Dad with Summer Vacation Bible School, and cooking many delicious meals for company.

In 1977 we as a family moved to Stettler, Alberta where Dad was taken from us a year later, never recovering from heart surgery. Although without Dad, Mom was broken and lonely she always had a sparkle in her eye when she reminisced of the good times they’d had. God blessed them with twenty-two years of wedded bliss.

As we children began our own homes Mom looked forward to each one coming to visit. She loved her children, their spouses, and each grandchild unconditionally. In later years Mom moved to Linden enjoying friends close by who helped fill her lonely hours. As her health withered Mom appreciated her caregivers . She retained her smile and sense of humor until the end, leaving us with a quiet assurance that she was ready to leave this world.

Although we will miss her we are thankful she can join our family circle in Heaven. Leaving behind: David & Grace Unruh Stettler, AB, Diana & Mervin Toews, Welsford, NS, Rollie & Dorothy Unruh, Stettler, AB, Rhonda & Lester Rempel, Gilbert Plains, MB, thirteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren

Mom’s siblings: Anne Unruh, Marlene Wiebe, Marcella & Jim Wilson, Glenn & Frieda Reimer, Dale & Rita  Reimer Eunice & Percy Thiessen, Dorothy & John Schartner.

Predeceased by her husband, one grandson, parents, one sister and one brother.

Our family gives special thanks to Westview Care Community for the excellent care she received. Mom always told us it was the best place to live and she loved each caregiver.
