Phyllis Virginia Weseen (Sobey)

1933 – 2020

Phyllis was born June 20, 1933 in Newcastle, New Brunswick, and passed away peacefully at Castor, Alberta on July 16, 2020.

Phyllis grew up in Maple Glen N.B. with her 5 siblings and attended school in Newcastle. She achieved her teaching certificate at 20 years of age and had already embarked on her career at Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. Phyllis moved on to teach and to seek out adventure and friendships next at Valleyfield, Quebec where she taught and coached basketball. Then off to the North West Territories and Fort Smith, where she forged many relationships and made the very best of the territory, skiing, canoeing, and discovering the north. She was transferred next to Port Radium where she met an apprentice electrician working at the mine there.

Lorne and Phyllis were married Dec 29th, 1958 in Vermilion, Alberta. As the new couple found their way, their family grew, Lionel was born in Newcastle in 1959, Barry in Calgary the next year, and Bill in Castor in 1964, where they settled and started an electrical business. Phyllis soon returned to teaching at Halkirk, Castor Elementary, and Theresetta Schools.

When Phyllis moved on from her teaching career, she worked to raise her family of which she was fiercely proud, was a wonderful cook with famous apple pies and dumplings, managed the book work for their company, and cultivated and mastered many crafts and skills from dress making and sewing and knitting   to needlepoint, photography, cross country skiing and more. She cherished her many friendships, forged throughout her working career, her involvement in the united church, and the IODE.

Although Phyllis had some tough and challenging years as she aged, she loved dearly her grandchildren, and always set aside her own difficulties to find out what was happening with her kids and grandkids lives. She had an immensely energetic and adventurous spirit, reading, learning, and meeting new challenges every step of her journey.

Phyllis leaves to mourn her passing loving husband Lorne; sons Lionel (Silvia) and their children Nelivia, Kimberly and Starsha, son Barry (Mary Ann), son Bill (Donna) and their children Dillon (Katherine Thibault) and their son Ellis, and Kayl Weseen; siblings Alice Allain, Bud (Carolyn) Sobey, Arnold (Linda) Sobey, Gloria (Clarence) Taylor.  Phyllis is predeceased by her parents Elsie and Clarence; brother Cecil and brother in law Anthony.

Memorial Contributions may be made in Phyllis’ memory to Trigeminal Neuralgia in c/0 Parkview Funeral Chapels, Box 186 Castor, AB T0C 0X0.
