Bill was predeceased by his wife Lillian (Viger) Bauer in July 2004.

Born October 16, 1923, William (Bill) was the eldest of two children born to Charles and Elizabeth (Rock) Bauer of Stettler. While growing up Bill attended Blumenau School. Bill farmed at the family home place until 1945 when he bought his Grandfather John Rock’s farm south east of Stettler.

In the fall of 1948 he married Lillian Viger, daughter of Albert and Dorothea Viger and together they had four children. Bill worked for the Municipal District and County of Stettler from 1952 to 1985 as Pest Control Officer and Weed Inspector. In 1955 an Agricultural Service Board was established and Bill was appointed Agricultural Fieldman, a position he held for 30 years until he retired. Bill proudly looked back on the tree planting program, the results of which can be seen all over the County.

Bill was dependable in supporting his family and community throughout his life. In the early days of telephone service he performed local telephone line repairs, and often climbed telephone poles to keep the local phone service in operation. For many years Bill was a volunteer Fireman and County Fire Chief for the County of Stettler, responding to numerous fire calls, and attending training practice sessions.

Bill was a committed and dedicated farmer, always keeping an eye on the weather, grain and hay crops. He took pride in being able to be self-sufficient in repairing and maintaining his farm equipment and tools.

After retirement Bill enjoyed staying involved in farm activities, tending the vegetable garden and ice fishing in the winter months. His wife Lillian (Viger) Bauer passed away in July 2004. Bill lived on the farm until he was 95 years old at which time his health required he move into Heart Haven Lodge in Stettler.

He will be missed by many friends and family.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
