Obituary of Maxwell Ross Grandfield
Maxwell (Max) Ross Grandfield, a resident of Stettler, Alberta passed away September 13, 2017 at the age of 84 years.
Max was born on March 15, 1934. He grew up working on his family’s homestead farm near Nipawin with his father James and his mother Elizabeth (née Ross), both of the UK, and his brothers Ross and Bruce. At 16 years of age he served in the Canadian Militia, and later as an officer with the Saskatoon Police Department for eight-and-a-half years. Max became an evangelist in 1962. He began his ministry among the First Nations peoples of the north and maintained a great love for them all of his life, especially the Ministikwan Cree people and the family of his dear friend, Chief and Elder Peter Crookedneck (Sr.). Max married Florence (Flo) Whiteside of Stettler Alberta on February 2, 1967, and raised a large family with her. He worked as a Full Gospel evangelist for nearly 50 years. He evangelized with Flo and many of their children throughout the U.S. and Canada, and on his own in South Africa and Trinidad, and finally, with his good friend Mike Thomas in Israel in 2008.
Max enjoyed bible study, archery, canoeing, frontier muzzle-loading, bow hunting, leather working, collecting coffee cups (by accident?), walking for miles a day, playing his banjo and fiddle, watching old movies, making practical jokes and inventing thrilling bedtime stories for his children and grandchildren. Maxwell is survived by his wife Florence, brother Bruce (Penny), children Laura, Robert (Marg), Craig, Angela, Virgil, Joel (Angel), Virginia (Greg), Jonathan (Teri), Veronica (Tom), Tamara (Todd), Elizabeth (Sean), Rachel (Casey), Suzanne (Daniel), their aunt Elaine Carr, 37 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and hundreds of brothers and sisters in the Lord. Maxwell is predeceased by his brother Ross, his father James, and mother Elizabeth.
A graveside funeral service will be held September 28th at 2:00 pm at Woodlawn Cemetery, in the town of Max’s birth, Nipawin, Saskatchewan with Pastor Peter Stuart Crookedneck Jr. of Meadow Lake Bridge Ministries and Ministikwan Youth Bible Camp officiating.
The family would like to thank individual caregivers in Lethbridge, AB, and the entire staff of Heritage House of Stettler, AB, and hospital for treating Max with such professionalism, respect and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be given in Max’s name to the Ministikwan Youth Bible Camp (toward archery equipment, canoes, etc.; Ministikwan Youth Bible Camp - Box 1094, Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, S9X 1Y8.), or Samaritan’s Purse (20 Hopewell Way N.E. Calgary, Alberta, T3J 5H5).
