Obituary of Irma Simons

Please share a memory of Irma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irmgard (Irma) Simons died unexpectedly at the Stettler General Hospital on January 25, 2020. Irma was born December 12, 1926 to Dr. Theodor and Elise Simons in Duisburg, Germany. Her youth was consumed by the second World War. Irma became a Laboratory Technologist and initially worked in forensic medicine in Duisburg. She then spent several years on the island of Norderney, a place she dearly loved, working in cancer treatment research. In 1958 Irma followed her brother to Canada and came to Stettler on a work visa to be the head of the laboratory at the hospital. She returned to Germany in 1961 with a profound love for central Alberta. In 1968 she returned to Stettler and resumed her work at the hospital, a job she held until her retirement in 1991. In retirement Irma had a very active life. She loved hiking the mountains, skiing, swimming, and, most of all, she loved walking her collie dogs. Irma volunteered for many years at the Stettler library and was active in the Buffalo Lake Naturalists and Federation of Alberta Naturalists. Music, especially choral music, was also a passion of Irma's and she loved to sing. Irma was predeceased by her parents, brother Theo and sister Margrit. She is survived by son Peter and niece Christa (Rick). A memorial service for Irma will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020. Memorial donations can be made to the Stettler Regional Library or to the Stettler Food Bank. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by signing the guestbook at www.stettlerfuneralhome.com.
