It was with deep sadness that I heard about the passing of Mr. Tash, my all-time favorite teacher. He had a way of making us each feel that we were his favorites! My best friend and I weren't the most studious, but we sure loved the life lessons in Biology and the way he made us feel that we were more than students--that we were unique and fun and valued so much by him. Practicing the Grand March was a grade 12 highlight, and he had us moving and stepping in time, all with a calm respect and mutual affection that colored everything he did. He is the reason I became a teacher, and I have often asked myself, "What would Mr. Tash do?" We were all so grateful for his attendance at our reunions and gathered around him like a large fan club. Somehow he still was able to not only show he remembered us but he cared about what we were doing and who we had become. He was one-of-a kind to be sure, and we were all so lucky to have had such a great man as our teacher.
Selene, I know that to all of us, he was Mr. Tash, but to you he was dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very sad time.

Penny and family....my heart really goes out to you all. Such a great loss! All I can say is that the world was a better place with Don in it. He had such an uncanny way of making everyone feel so good about themselves. It truly was a gift that he shared with all in a sincere, genuine, selfless way. When I started teaching, it was in the high school and Don was so welcoming and pleasurable to work with... and when I would bring Kelly and Jennifer up to the staffroom, he would have such crazy fun teasing them! What a character he was! You always felt amazingly happy around Don! I am sorry that I can't attend the ceremony tomorrow, but you will all be in my thoughts and prayers. My deepest, most sincere condolences go out to all of you! Colleen

To the Tash family,
I am sorry that I cannot attend the memorial service this weekend. I had many great teachers (Wm. E Hay class of '92) and Mr. Tash was my favorite. I realized after high school that he treated his students not much differently than he treated adults. He taught his subjects very well and he was an even better teacher of life. I always enjoyed running into him and the visits we would have. I will never forget him and I will be thinking of him and everyone paying their respects this Saturday afternoon.
Respectfully,
Kurt Simon

Dear Penny and Family,
Mr. Tash is by far one of the best parts of my high school experience in Stettler. Besides a fair and fun teacher, he always had time for a kind hallway smile and friendly greeting and felt then as I have through many years of chance meetings that he was sincerely interested in what was happening in my life.
He was a man who made time to make a surprise appearance at our 30th Grad Reunion, one of I'm sure many that he probably attended. I remember watching, but not surprised at how he remembered each of the mob of former students by name with an ear to ear warm heartfelt smile and short conversation. To think of us 30 years later, well we simply must have been his favorite class!
Who else but Mr. Tash, with a few other assistants, could have pulled together year after year more than 150 hormone/testosterone raging teenagers for an impressive choreographed Grand March to showcase, for our families, the fine young men and women we had become. We as kids probably didn't think much of the many noon hour practices, but have we ever forgot it? He definitely ran a tight ship and it was in your best interest to show up!:)
He was a special man and a true inspiration in my life. He will always be remembered with fond memories by those of us that were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him at some point in our lives.
Rest in Peace Mr. Tash - I will miss our hugs and catch ups!

Penny & family, I was shocked when I heard today from my brother that Don had passed away. I remember Don working on the Tebay ranch in the summers. He would wear his leather jacket to ward off the mosquitos and whenever there was lightning we would find Don laying out in the middle of the field to avoid being hit by lightning. I also had him for high school chemistry when he was doing his student teaching. An outstanding teacher, friend and human being. He will be missed. Will & Lynne Tebay

Dear Mrs. Tash and family. My sincere condolences to your family in your sad loss of a wonderful man. Mr. Tash was one of my favorite teachers and I will never forget his "above and beyond the call of duty" brand of teaching. It amazed me that he never forgot a student. Even though I only took my Grade 12 in Stettler he always stopped and talked with me every time we met in Stettler over the 43 years that followed. The world needs more Don Tashes.

I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Tash's passing. He was one of the best teachers we had and I remember my Bio 30 project being stored in his classroom fridge - several cattle fetuses at differing stages of development that I was dissecting! (I wonder where I got those from?? ;-)
It was obvious he cared about his students and kept in touch with many of us over the years, always wanting to know how our lives were going. Don, you touched our hearts and molded our minds and set so many of us on our career paths. Your booming voice and twinkling eyes will be missed.
I won't be able to attend on the 18th; but, I will be there in spirit with thoughts and prayers sent over the mountains from the west coast to Penny and family.

To laugh often and love much;
to win the respect of intelligent persons
and the affection of children;
to earn the approbation of honest critics
and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to give of one's self;
to leave the world a little better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to have played and laughed with enthusiasm
and sung with exultation;
to know that even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived,
this is to have succeeded.
Rest In Peace, Sir. You did indeed live a successful life.

Penny & family,
I was so saddened to hear of your loss. He was my favorite teacher, a wonderful man, & in my mind, throughout high school & the decades that followed, he was always "Mr Tash". When I was in school he always had time to listen & give advice & in the years after graduation he would always stop on the street & ask what was happening in my life & how my kids & parents were doing. The fact that he attended our class reunions meant a lot to so many of us. May he rest in peace & may your wonderful memories help you through this terrible time.

Well known and much loved by so many, Don always had time for a chat because he was truly interested in all people--young and old. A "Mister fix-it," Don could make anything work if you just asked him. St Peter Lutheran will miss his keen eye in finding a problem and fixing it, his cheery hello, and his cajoling of us to "fess up" to our real age. His life was that of a burning ember - radiating warmth. God gave him many gifts and he willingly used them to help others.
Our hearts go out to you Penny and Family - he loved you all so very much,
we will miss him too!! Love Patti & Mitch

I was shocked and saddened to hear this news. I have so many fond memories of this man...definitely one of my all time favourite teachers. He had a way of making me feel like I mattered and was genuinely interested in what was going on in my life....even years after I graduated and moved away from Stettler. Don certainly left a legacy at Wm E Hay and in the surrounding community!! He was so much more than a great teacher. I feel honoured to have had him in my life. My love and hugs to you all.

My Thoughts and Prayers to all of you. Mr. Tash was one of the most incredible people I was fortunate enough to have had in my life. My years in high school were not always a positive experience for me. I struggled to fit in and found myself scared to attend most days. Except the days I knew I was in Mr. Tash's class . He always encouraged me to stand tall and to keep on trying no matter what or who would try to stop me. I will always cherish his words of encouragement and he made biology fun and interesting. Thank you Mr. Tash May you Rest In Peace! <3

Penny and family, please accept my sincere condolence in your recent loss of Don. It is hard to put into words, to say, what an awesome person he was. Whenever I met him he was always friendly to me and I felt that he treated me with respect, and I in turn respected him very much. Your loss is a loss for the whole community. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that your loss is shared by many and also I hope that you can find some comfort in the memories that you have of him. RIP Don, you will be missed.
