Agnes Sorensen

Obituary of Agnes Christina Sorensen

Agnes Christina Sorensen passed away peacefully on April 22, 2016 in Stettler, Alberta at the age of 93 years. Agnes was born at home near Endiang on the family farm (where Les and Rosemary Stulberg now live) on March 30, 1923 as the second child to Sandy and Janet Campbell. Agnes spent her childhood days attending school at Leith Hill and helping out on the family farm. In her younger years she did venture out to work. She worked one winter at a furniture store in Stettler and Agnes also worked one winter at Red and White Grocery in Alix for Mrs. Malm. Agnes loved to talk about when she worked for Dr. Waddell in Stettler. Her job was mostly looking after kitchen and household chores while Mrs. Waddell was expecting their fourth child, but her highlight was talking about the twin boys and their older brother. After Mrs. Waddell came home from the hospital Agnes’ job was complete. Another story we remember hearing was about her riding the train from Endiang to Stettler with a sore back to see a blind chiropractor. And of course there were all the stories about the dear old faithful horse “Laddie,” who sometimes transported all three of the kids to school and back. Agnes was a hard working lady; always putting others needs ahead of her own. She was a caregiver for her Mom, Uncle Bob and cousin Andy. On December 28, 1956 Agnes married the love of her life Andy. They moved into the new house that Andy and Louie Engel built on the Sorensen farm. Together they had two children, Janet in December of 1958 and then Jim in March 1961. The highlights of her life were when her grandchildren came along: Joni, Ian, Kyle, Chad and Grace. The cookie jar was always full and the candy cupboard stocked. Agnes will be remembered for her excellent memory. She was also well known for feeding people on short notice and always made sure nobody left her home without being fed something. She was an amazing cook and was famous for her homemade turkey soup, homemade pies, steamed peach pudding, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding, which she did until the age of 85. Agnes and Andy always had a big garden to fill the deep freezer and canning cupboard. She loved to have a good time! Some of her best times were snowmobiling around the community with neighbours, playing a loud game of boys against girls Smear, camping and travelling. Agnes and Andy spent fourteen winters heading south where they made some lifelong friends. Agnes always enjoyed her time there, but was always happy to get home! Agnes always looked forward to reading the Stettler paper when it came on Friday, enjoyed crocheting and loved reading the Endiang, Byemoor, Halkirk and many more community books. Agnes stayed living on the farm after Andy passed away in 2007 before moving to Paragon Place in Stettler in 2012, where she resided until her health declined recently. Her heart stayed in the Endiang Community though, as that is where she spent most of her life. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Andy, parents Alexander and Janet Campbell, brother Dougald Campbell, daughter in law Karen, special Uncle Bob and cousin Andy Kiddie, as well as other family members and treasured friends. Agnes is survived by her loving family: daughter Janet (Bob) Campbell of Byemoor; son Jim (Leanne) Sorensen of Endiang; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Joni (Harley) Hutton of Hanna and their children: Walker, Reegan, Dexter and Clay, Ian Campbell of Byemoor, Kyle (Janelle) Sorensen of Endiang and their son Ryland, Chad (Melitta) Sorensen of Big Valley and their son Nash, Grace Sorensen (Kale Gist) of Stettler; sister Mickey Pearn of Stettler; sisters and brother in law: Ella (John) Kisser of Stettler, Dellas Raessler of Delia, Clara Sorensen of Stettler, Marj Sorensen of Hanna and Patsy Sorensen of Camrose; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held at the Endiang Community Hall on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 2:00 P.M.
