Helen Hertha (Scheerschmidt) Finlay
Helen was born on August 6th, 1931 in Stettler, AB and passed away on January 3, 2020 also in Stettler.
She went to school at the Lone Pine School until leaving school at the age of 14 to go out to work. She took her Nurses Aid Training working in Stettler and Hanna. She met Franklin Finlay and they were married Oct 4th of 1954.
Franklin was working in the oilfield and they lived in Drayton Valley for a while. Greg was born May of 1956, Kim was born June of 1958, and Bess was born February of 1962.
In May of 1962 they bought and moved to the farm south of Botha. Helen took great pride in raising chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, pigs, dairy and beef cattle, bees for a while until she became allergic to being stung. Helen also had a large garden and orchard which she would harvest in the fall then do canning and pickles.
For a few years Franklin coached hockey teams in Botha and Helen would mend the hockey uniforms for the teams. They also enjoyed ice fishing in the winter and often fished at Pigeon Lake with friends and family. After moving to Stettler she enjoyed her flowers in her yard and the birds. Helen loved visiting with family, friends, reading and doing puzzle books.
Helen put up a brave fight with kidney cancer for over 15 years.
She will be missed by many.
She is survived by her children: Greg (Vivian) Finlay, Kim Finlay, Bess (Gary) Shepherd; grandchildren: Tanner Finlay, Amanda (Tim Omilusik) Shepherd, Dawn Saunders Dahl, Shawn (Michele) Grouette, Pamela (Scott Anderson) Grouette, Ashley (Tim) Jeffereys great grandchildren Deanna Omilusik, Rebecca Grouette, Nathanial Grouette, Emily Grouette, Wyle Jeffreys, Rocky Jeffreys; sisters: Emily Scheerschmidt, Christa MacLeod; brothers Edgar (Pauline) Scheerschmidt, Ray Scheerschmidt as well as numerous other relatives and many dear friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Amandus Bernhardt Scheerschmidt and Louise (Wienelt) Scheerschmidt; husband Franklin; brothers Edward and Bernard, sister in law Louise Scheerschmidt, brother in law Don MacLeod, sister in law Margret Vickers and brother in law Stan Vickers and nephew Everett (Irene) Wilson.
A celebration of Helen’s life will take place at the Stettler Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9th 2020 at 2:00 PM.
Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to STARS, The Alberta Kidney Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
