Obituary of Ruth Frances Odell

Ruth Odell, age 92, passed away peacefully March 13, 2012 at the Pine Ridge Continuing Care, Stettler. Ruth leaves to cherish her memory 2 children, son John Odell of Edmonton and daughter Valerie Odell (Brian Briltz) of Stettler; 6 grandchildren: Sheri, Jason, Crystal, Amber, Delaine and James and 5 great grandchildren: Alex, Levi, Riley, Hailey, and Nathan. Also, she is survived by two sisters-in-law, Esther Lynn of Fort Assiniboine, Joan Lynn of Medicine Hat; and numerous nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bob Odell (October 1980), her parents (James & Susie), four sisters (Sylvia, Della, Susie, Nora) and three brothers (James, Bob & Pete). Ruth was born August 26th, 1919, in Calgary the third youngest of eight children. She was raised on the ranch south of Youngstown. She attended Crocus Plains School which her sisters Nora & Sylvia taught. She tells of riding horseback with her siblings to the school and helping her brother Bob build the fire in the school house. Her lifelong dream to be a nurse was realized when she graduated in 1943 at Royal Alex in Edmonton. She married Bob August 28, 1946. They lived in Hanna. Ruth left the nursing profession to raise John & Valerie and to help in the family store, Odell’s Hardware. She returned to nursing in the mid 1970’s and retired in 1984. In early 1990’s she moved to Stettler to be closer to family. She will be well remembered by all as a generous, warm & loving lady. Celebration of her life is at the Stettler Funeral Home on Monday March 19 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pine Ridge Centre are being collected by the Stettler Funeral Home.
