Hazel Maureen Hamilton was born August 10, 1917 the second child and eldest daughter of Roy and Mary McCord of Cornucopia, Alberta. In 1921, the family moved to a farm north of Gadsby and in 1923 they moved to Red Willow, where she started school. In April 1926 the family moved to Nevis and she completed her schooling (grade 11) at South Buffalo Lake School. Maureen and Tom Hamilton were married January 17, 1937 at Mirror, Alberta. They started their married life on the Early farm just north of her parent’s farm; it was here that their daughter Elva Ann was born June 8, 1937. Thomas Darryl joined the family September 25, 1942; the family was living at the Gus farm. They purchased the farm on the south side of Nevis in 1944; Garry Wayne was born June 13, 1944. Maureen resided at the farm for 50 years; her wish is for the Hamilton family to own the land for 100 years. Maureen and Tom loved dancing, with their favourite waltz being Somewhere My Love. They also enjoyed square dancing, playing cribbage and whist. No one who stopped for a visit or card game left without a few cups of coffee and Dad’s cookies. Maureen was a farmer’s wife; she helped with the animals and with the fall harvest, stooking the grain, pitching the hay, raised a large garden, made meals and took coffee out to the field. She also helped at the Nevis school when the teacher was away. At the age of 60, she completed a driver’s training course and got her driver’s license. Her green Dodge truck and blue Blazer made many trips to visit family and attend rodeos, 4-H events, graduations, dance festivals, hockey and football games, Christmas concerts; whatever her family was doing she was there. She was a member of the Nevis Community Club, Rebecca’s, Stettler Oilwives (40 years), Stettler Legion, Ripley School, she volunteered at Superfluity and the Stettler Food Bank. Maureen was predeceased by her husband Tom 1977, son Darryl 2006, daughter Elva 2007, infant daughter Eva 1938, her parents, her brothers George, Walter and Alton and her sister Nettie.
