I went to Vegreville Composite High School with Rod. I was always amazed at how he could "be smart, studious", "be athletic", "be one of the gang" all at the same time, while avoiding the pitfalls of teenage life. He was solid. I was glad to know him.

Mr. McElroy was one of the few coaches I've had in my life that was able to be-friend his athletes and yet maintain the discipline and respect of his team. I still remember him giving us a ride home in his black Toyota truck and having to operate the stick shift while he drove since I was jammed into the middle of the front seat.
My deepest sympathies to your family, coach.

Our deepest sympathy to the McElroy family. Our kids always enjoyed elementary school because of his "leadership" and also the personal attention he gave to the kids with his "high-fives" and a smile on his face. He always knew to match the kids to the right parents. He was a wonderfull principal.

I am so shocked and saddedned to hear of your loss. I was a student of Mr. McElroys in the late 1980s. I also babysat the boys quite a few times then. How time flies. I remember him being a wonderful teacher and how much he loved his kids- both his sons, and his students. He will be missed greatly by many.

Rod welcomed us to the school when we moved here in 1992 and through LAC and Festival (as well as our 3 children going through the school system and Melissa going through with Patrick) we got to know him. He was a very caring man and a wonderful educator. The town will miss him.

I am so sorry to hear that we lost such a great man. Our family thought very highly of him and are devastated at his loss. My older daughter went through elementary almost 7 years ago but was always very fond of him, and my younger daughter is going into grade 3 and was heartbroken to hear he passed - she said, "He was the best principal!" The times when I had to go in to the school to do anything, he was always kind, helpful and caring towards me and my family, and my heart aches to know that he is gone. What a source of pride he must have been for his family - I''m so sorry for your loss.
