“A gracious lady” is how many people have described mom. Growing up in the McKenzie homestead south of Fleet, mom was the youngest girl in a family of seven. Life was made up of love, laughter, hard work, some hard times and hand-me downs. She attended Kimberley School and Fleet Rural High School, where she met her future husband Gordon. During these years she enjoyed baseball, riding horses, and family times. When World War ll broke out, Gordon joined the Air Force. He and mom were married on September 20, 1941 and spent the next four years in St. Thomas, Ont. where Gordon was stationed as an instrument instructor training flight crews. On their return to Fleet, they farmed for many years and raised five children. Mom was always busy with kids, cows, geese, chickens and a wonderful garden that kept everybody fed. In addition to being a super homemaker she found time to teach Sunday school, and participate in Fleet UCW, Eastern Star and WI groups. We all took pride in her sewing skills and she spent many hours creating costumes, fixing, mending and everything in between. Her home was always open to family and friends with a pot of tea or coffee and freshly baked cinnamon buns or pie. Mom had the gift of hospitality and a serving attitude. She appreciated all our efforts, and was our biggest fan. Lea was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon in 1974. Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Dale(Judy) Wetter of Victoria, B.C., Wendy(Doug) Dunkle of Castor, Leslie Wetter of Fleet, Chad(Deborah) Wetter of Trail, B.C. and Josie(Eric) Neilson of Fleet; grandchildren, Dwayne (Deanna) Dunkle, Angela(Rob)Christensen, Danelle and Marlee Wetter, Colin, Dayna and Lewis Neilson; great grandchildren, Jenessa and Darien Dunkle, Gianna Wetter, and sisters in law Ada McKenzie, Lois(Harvey) Ertman, and Irene Wetter. Lea was also predeased by all her siblings, Edna, Alice, Mabel, Janet, Bob, Al and her brother in law Leslie.
