Please share a memory of Lucille to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lucille Julia (Guillemaud) Bain passed away in the early hours of December 18, 2017 at the age of 94, a few short hours after her entire family was at her bedside in the Castor Extendicare. Lucille was born on October 18, 1923 in Edmonton and raised on the family farm in Bentley, Alberta. Life was tough and she was challenged to help take care of herself, five brothers and two sisters. She often told us of the incredibly hard work on the farm in those days, and of riding to the one- room school on horseback - with no saddle or bridle - in all kinds of horrible weather. Lucille nursed at the Castor Hospital for over 30 years and it was during the early start to her career that she met a young charismatic Irishman named Joe at a local dance. He became her husband in 1947. Lucille and Joe raised six children: Bernie (Moe) Dion, Shiela (Tom) Miles, Joey, Ed (Bev) Bain, Cindy (Drake) Mason and Susan (Ken) Bouma. She was the proud grandma to Monique, Julia, Brae, Carson and great-grandma to Hudson, Katie and Sophie. Mom was a fantastic cook and an even better baker; she turned out incredible meals, lunches and best of all, fantastic desserts, on a daily basis. She was also a proud member of the CWL, made countless dishes and served regularly for events in Castor for years. Mom’s cooking was only second to her talent behind the sewing machine. We can still hear the hum of that old Singer machine at the kitchen table as she turned out one-of-a-kind, retail-worthy clothes for all of us, and later for all of our kids. After retirement Mom spent many hours volunteering at the Opportunity Center and the Castor Tourist Information Booth (a job she really loved). She also took up floor curling at the Golden Circle and discovered a real talent and competitive streak for that sport. Before moving into the Castor Extendicare, Mom spent seven delightful years in her little home in the Sunrise Manor. She loved that place and said she felt happiest and safe there always. Mom was the most loving, caring person you could ever know. Her kids were her world and she did everything in her power to give us the best life she could. She made sure we were well-behaved, respectful, kind, well-groomed and polite at all times. She always made sure she looked her best and we were always so proud of how beautiful she was. Never one to take credit for anything, we think she deserves all the credit in the world for all we are today. Thanks Mom. We love you. Rest in peace - you’ve more than earned it. Predeceased by her infant son Joey; husband Joe; daughter Shiela; sister Bernadette; Lucille is survived by her children: Bernadette (Maurice) Dion, Ed (Bev) Bain, Cindy (Drake) Mason, Sue (Ken) Bouma; son in law Tom Miles; grandchildren Monique Dion (Shaina Leonard), Julia Dion (Dan Trinh), Brae Mason and Carson Bain; great grandchildren: Hudson Dion Leonard, Katie Dion Leonard and Sophie Trinh; sister in law Patricia Bain; 1 sister and 5 brothers, numerous nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends. The family would like to thank the staff of the Castor Extendicare who gave Mom so much love and attention. We always felt she was receiving the best care. Special thanks to Gwen for your extra attention to our Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Canada. Thank you.
