Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen Morie was surrounded by love when she slipped away peacefully September 2, 2016 in Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital, Long Term Care. She was born to Pete and Julia Neis, December 18, 1931 on the family farm close to Lousana, Alberta. She was the 9th of ten children. Families struggled to make ends meet and the Neis family was no exception. While growing up, Helen and her siblings worked hard both inside the home and out in the fields. It was a typical depression era family, money was scarce and sometimes food was too. Despite the hard times, there was still laughter and fond childhood memories. Schooling was very important to Helen. She completed Grade 9 at the Service School and through sheer determination Grade 10 by correspondence. After this she had to put her education aside. Her Dad’s health had failed and her help was needed on the farm. It was about this time that an eligible, good looking young man came to teach at Wood Lake, a nearby country school. Sam and Helen were introduced and so began their life long love for each other. They were married June 23, 1951. That fall Sam took a teaching job in Shooting Lake, Alberta. By 1954 when they moved to Bulwark, their family had doubled in size with the addition of Beverly and Brian. Bulwark was a close knit, warm community where Helen developed many life long friends. Six years later Sam’s teaching career took them to Castor where two more daughters, Becky and Monica were born. For the next 55 years the big house on the corner with the white picket fence was home. Raising her family and keeping a well maintained house and garden brought Helen happiness. As a wife, mother and member of the community and church, she was kept very busy. Helen loved being a Grandma and her Grandchildren loved her right back. In their retirement years, Sam and Helen travelled all over Alberta and to Arizona with the seniors slow pitch team. Helen was always there as a number one fan. They were fortunate enough to see some of the world before Helen’s health began to fail. As her health continued to decline she moved to long term care. Helen was predeceased by her only son, Brian and loving husband Sam. Helen is survived by her daughters, Bev Morie, Becky (Trevor) Blumhagen and Monica Morie; 10 grandchildren: Nicholas Fraser, Patrick Fraser, Jason Morie, Amanda Morie, Tamara Morie, Elyse Blumhagen, Leah Blumhagen, Jenna (Quinton)Bell, Robert Gustavson, Kassidy Gustavson; 2 great grandchildren Taylor and Joshua Evans; sister Audrey Neis; sister in laws Ruth Hupalo, Rosie Wychopen and Lucy Gorovenko, Muriel Neis; brothers in law George Morie and Stefan Morie; many nieces, nephews and friends.
