Obituary of Isobel Constance Baker

On October 21, 2012 at the age of 94 years Isobel Baker peacefully passed away in the arms of her loving family. Isobel was born in Calgary, Alberta at the Scottish Nursing Home. Her parents James Andrew and Annie (nee Thomson) were pioneer farmers of Scottish decent. She was raised in the Scotfield area and attended the rural schools. She later moved to Calgary where she attended Normal School. In 1938 she received her teaching certificate. Isobel was a gifted teacher and taught for a total of 23 years in several rural schools, she later substituted in Calgary for another 6 years. On April 9, 1947, shortly after his return from “overseas”, Isobel married Harley Baker. They then moved to the Halkirk/Castor area where they farmed for a total of 27 years and raised their 3 children. They retired in 1974 and moved to Calgary where they enjoyed square dancing, the Village Square Seniors Club and were members of the Robert McClure United Church. Together they travelled extensively throughout North America and Europe. In 1986 her beloved husband of 39 years passed away. Isobel then bravely continued to explore the world on her own also visiting New Zealand and Australia. Isobel is predeceased by her husband Harley, her sister Margaret and her brothers Norman and Douglas. She is survived by her sons Kenneth (Marcia) of Chestermere, Alberta, Daryl (Beth) of Dewinton, Aalberta and daughter Gayle (Wayne) Didyk of Bragg Creek, Alberta; her grandchildren Lance, Miranda, Christopher, Cody and Harley; great grandchild Brooke; sisters in law; brothers in law; and numerous nieces and nephews. Our Mother often said she truly believed she had lived through the best of times and we as her children believe that we were blessed to be part of the best of times. To our loving Mother we will always keep you in our hearts. We would like to say thank you to Symphony Senior Living where Isobel moved to in 2009 and where she leaves behind many new friends. Also thank you to all of Isobel’s old friends who always stayed in touch with her. A special thanks to the staff of both the Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals who attended our Mother. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foothills Country Hospices Society, Okotoks, Alberta which made our Mother’s last moments on earth a time of peace. A funeral service for Isobel Baker will be held at the Knox United Church, Castor, Alberta.
