Alice Heidecker passed away peacefully in her sleep at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor, Alberta on December 9, 2011 at the age of 90 years. Alice was born in Vancouver, BC on October 10, 1921. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Martha Skroda, her sisters Olga and Lily of Vancouver and her brother Paul of Toronto, her husband of 48 years Herman in 1990 and infant son John in 1956. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: daughter Elaine of Calgary and her children Anne, Michael and Christina, her great grandchildren Adam, Jesse, Jennifer; great grandson Mitchell, son Richard and his children Joel and Christopher; son Barry of Castor and daughter Linda and Dale Guse of Talbot, grandson Joe and great grandson Nycholas; other family and friends. After meeting and marrying Herman in 1943 while he was stationed in Vancouver during the war, Elaine was born and Mom and Elaine took the train out to the Federal area to await his return. Then after his return from the war they settled down in a one room house next to the schoolhouse at Lucerne where Dad took up teaching, subsequently moving to Castor in 1949. Mom was kept busy making lunches for the school children and being a house wife and mother. She kept busy with her gardening in the summer, knitting and curling in the winter and was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary. Blessed with a quick wit and a good sense of humor she enjoyed visiting with all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. For many years Alice and Herman and various family members made the long summer vacation out to Surrey, BC to visit with her parents and family members. But after Herman’s retirement they discovered salmon fishing and combined the two for many years. In her later years Alice enjoyed camping and fishing, spending countless hours in the boat trolling for the big one. She also became an avid reader enjoying western novels and loved to Google and play games on her own computer.
