Florence Elizabeth (Bessie) Payne was born December 2, 1919 on a farm south of Lauderdale School to Edwin and Florence Fuller. She was the youngest of four children, having three brothers. Bessie took grades one through twelve at Lauderdale School which had a high school at the time. She also studied art at Calgary Technical School. August 20, 1940 Nelson Payne and Bessie were married and raised a family of five while farming in the Veldt district west of Castor, remaining there for over 60 years. They moved to the Paintearth Lodge in 2003, Nelson passed away December 9 of that year. In March of 2007 Bessie moved to the Extendicare in Viking. She had a great talent for music, writing, painting and an intense interest in flowers. Bessie was columnist for various papers including the Castor Advance where she was also a news reporter. She belonged to various groups in the community also serving All Saints Anglican Church as organist for a great number of years. Shortly after the Paintearth Lodge opened Bessie worked there in the kitchen. Bessie passed away December 5, 2011, one day before her brother Alfred Fuller passed away in England. Left to mourn her passing is her family: Frances Turnbull, Ken (Evelyn), Charles (Judy), Florence Payne and Emilie (Paul) Rae, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister in law Mary Fuller, cousins Marion Smith and Bill (Mary) Hatherley and cousin in law Ella Hatherley, 8 nephews and 5 nieces. Bessie was predeceased by her husband Nelson in 2003, grandchildren George Turnbull and Dyan Payne, brother John Fuller and wife Susie, brother Edwin Fuller, brother in law Lewis Payne and wife Margaret, sister in law Emilie Wiffen and husband Fred, sons in law Bill Olson and Walter Turnbull and grand nephew Nolan Fuller.
