Obituary of George Gideon Shreeves
GEORGE GIDEON SHREEVES
On October 6, 2025, George Gideon Shreeves died peacefully at the age of 94 in Stettler, Alberta.
George was born February 9, 1931 in Leduc, Alberta to parents George and Susie Shreeves. He was the youngest of 4 children and spent his childhood in Leduc, Calgary and Edmonton.
He went to work following the completion of grade 9 as a labourer and then, while working on the first Imperial Oil Refinery in Edmonton, joined a crew that became the Riggers and Iron Workers.
George was the last of the founding members of Ironworkers Local 720 which was formed in 1949. He loved his work and didn’t retire until quitting time on his 65th birthday.
He married Mary Elizabeth Leigh on September 28, 1951. Together they raised 3 daughters and had been married almost 49 years when Mary died.
George was a great storyteller. With a twinkle in his eye, he would spin a tale about his childhood, his adventures in the North, or the wonders of what he had learned on the Internet or on the History channel. There was no phoning Dad “for a minute” because a call could easily last an hour. He enjoyed spending time on his boat “Honey Bee” and was a home beer and wine maker.
He was keenly interested in genealogy and, in his retirement years, traced his family tree back to the 1500s.
George is survived by 3 daughters: Linda (Carson) Porteous, Christine Edwards and Peggy Shreeves (Dave Nassichuk); 4 grandchildren and their families: Tara (Mike) Dickenson and their children Jordan, Kaelyn and Tristan; Mandy (Tyler) Oliver and their children Camryn, Julia and Elliet; Erin (Justun) Miller and their children Cassius and Atlin; Evan Edwards (Cindy Dayman) and their daughter Ashtyn.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
George was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2000; father George in 1939; mother Susie in 1964; siblings Thomas Shreeves, Noraedna Belley and Fern June Henry.
The family is grateful to the staff at Points West Living Stettler for the lovely care and kindness George received during his time there.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donating to the University Hospital Foundation, Donor Office, 8440-112 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2B7 or online at givetouhf.ca/donate-in-memory,
or to a charity of your choice.
There will be no funeral service as per George’s request. Interment of his ashes will take place at a later date in Cochrane, Alberta.
